Grock + Bogoch=

1) In which area of the body is central cyanosis most likely to be detected?

Here's the answer!

Central cyanosis is a result of low arterial oxygen levels. It is best detected in the tongue, oral mucous membranes or conjunctivae.

2) What are the causes of central cyanosis?

Here's the answer!

Causes:

– Methemoglobinemia

– V/Q mismatches

-High Altitude

-Decreased arterial oxygenation

-Anatomic shunts: Tetrology, and other terrible T’s.

-Abnormal hemoglobin

(Peripheral cyanosis is caused by normally saturated blood, with poor perfusion. Think: CHF, cold exposure, shock, vascular obstruction-PVD/arterial embolus)
