This month’s edition goes to . . . Dr. James Hassel!
Here’s the story . . .
A 9 month old boy was brought in for vomiting. The patient had normal vital signs, looked completely well, wasn’t crying at all and was tolerating PO in the ED but Hassel did a really thorough abdominal exam and noticed that the child had a subtle swelling on the right side of the abdomen. He grabbed the sono and we did 
a bedside exam and found a very clear intussusception. Even the surgery consultant was impressed with the catch and said that it was more likely to be reduced with air enema because it was early on. I followed up on the case and they were able to reduce it and the kid is doing well. I have to be honest, I’m not sure if I would have caught the mass on exam if he hadn’t asked me to specifically look for it. It was a great save.
