Rectal Resuscitation

We have had some cutting edge articles in the past but none have been so stimulating as the one that was presented by Nathan Reisman this month. If you are out in the wilderness and you come across a person who his hypovolemic, this article discussed the best way to resuscitate them by instilling fluids into the rectum.  That’s right, a “rectal resus.”  The PDF for this paper can be found here:

So, if you want to find out more about the treatment of hypotension in the wilderness, come down to the next Wilderness Medicine meeting which will take place January 14th.  We are going to be discussing the treatment of anaphylaxis with epinephrine using auto injectors.  Rumor has it, we will have a live demonstration how to use them “wilderness style.”  Hope to see you all there.
